Seppuku
Seppuku is done for a variety of reasons, the most common being dishonor or shame caused by the breaking of oaths. It is also done as a demonstration of loyalty to a deceased Matron, wife, or liege. Or, conversely, as a demonstration of disagreement with one whom the person has sworn allegiance. It is never entered into lightly.
Seppuku among Vornae should be done privately, after one has had chance to reflect on their dishonor, so that they will remember why their spirit seeks the circle. It is also customary to have a second (kaishakunin) present, to see that the death is clean and undisturbed. It is the second's duty to see to it that the person committing Seppuku goes through with the killing blow, and does not receive a life spell. Oftentimes, if one falters with the killing blow, or experiences undue pain, it is the duty of the Kaishakunin to deliver the killing blow for them. It is also the duty of the second to mind the person's belongings, and meet them in the circle to tell them of their death. Usually a second is a close friend, but occasionally it can be a sworn enemy who wishes to give Honor to the Seppuku by showing respect for her enemy, and acting as second.
Seppuku is a ritual cleansing on an emotional and spiritual level. The very act of Seppuku clears away dishonor, and gives one a chance to begin anew, with a new life. It is something deeply personal, and private. One must resurrect for this cleansing to be pure.
I understand that some jochu are disturbed by death, particularly at one's own hands... but from the Vornae perspective, an Honorable death, even a permanent one, is far preferred to a life of shame and disgrace.
